The trip to Sweden was a lengthy one, but once the plane landed all Shiya and Manley wanted to do was sleep. It was light there -sort of- where it would normally be dark. Jet lag was setting in pretty quickly and Shiya couldn't wait to get the bags and the dog to the hotel and settle in.
~~
Sleep came quickly for the bunch that night. Manley lay curled next to Shiya in the hotel bed -which, sadly, was not Great Dane sized. Still, they both slept soundly and awoke the next morning to the ringing of the alarm clock. The day was big. This was Manley's first show and while they had been doing a lot of practicing, this really was his day of reckoning. Shiya expected him to do his best. That was all she expected out of any of the dogs, that they do their best.
Shiya started the day by feeding her little man then soaking in a shower. The hot water felt good against her skin. Sweden was a hell of a lot colder than Kentucky this time of year, and that made her a little nervous. Would Manley be able to handle the cold?
~~
The view outside the hotel window was magnificent to say the least. The mountains were red and blue and the air was thick with crisp fog the slight golden glow of the faintly rising sun. A few patches of snow dotted the landscape but not much.
"Well Manley," Shiya said as she packed their bags for the day. "This is it. Lets see what you can do, eh kid?" The pup danced around her feet before finally settling back on the bed. Shiya laughed and shook her head as she finished stuffing the last bit of food and grooming tools into one of the bags. "Nope, up and at 'em." Manley looked up with big eyes, his tail thumping on the bed. "Fine. Five minutes." Shiya left him to his nap to go pack the car, returning to find him waiting for her at the door. Shiya smiled and led the pup to the car before buckling him in. "Lets go."
~~~
When they arrived the air was alive with light-heartedness and excitement. The crowd of spectators of large enough but the competitor pool was thin, but Shiya expected that. After they checked in, unpacked and pottied, Shiya walked Manley around for a meet and greet with other dogs and entrants. They visited several informational breed booths and food stands. Swedish food was wonderful, but it made Shiya miss Canada. They didn't have Moose in Kentucky. Shiya conversed lightly with those she could find who spoke English then she stopped to watch a few cute activities that took place before the Junior class took call.
The day was lively but when the intercom rang out for Junior Class contestants, Shiya knew it was time to get down to business. She took Manley back to the car for a short touch up, gave him the once over, took a deep breath, then wound her fingers through his lead. "Alrighty then." she exhaled.
~~~
Shiya waited patiently for judges to inspect Manley. She fidgeted a little while away her turn, though. After all this time she still got a little nervous at first shows. Manley was a good pup. He had good manners and good breeding and good training, but he was a pup nonetheless.
When their turn came Shiya walked the dog to their spot. Manley pulled himself easily into a stack and managed to focus on something shifting in the tall grass and fog nearby. Shiya stood tall beside him and allowed the judges to do their job. She watched them run their hands over him and discuss quietly to themselves and when they asked her to take him once around, she took firm hold on the lead and began moving.
The dog walked in a circle once before they began moving down the strip of grass. Things were going well, Manley's gait was steady and on pace. Shiya thought they were about to pull it off solidly, but then something, a bird maybe, puffed from the nearby underbrush. Manley went into full play mode, rear in the air, eyes wide, tongue out. "Tsssttt Manley noooo." She hissed under her breath and kept moving, tugging subtly on the lead to try and keep him moving. Manley bounced then let out a loud Dane 'ruff" before smacking the ground. "Manley, stahp!" Shiya hissed again, trying to keep her eyes focused. She could hear laughter from the people around her, and several dogs barking, excited by Manley's obvious invitation of play. After just a short moment the pup resumed gaiting. His movements were proud and fluid, long legs reaching through the fog.
As the pair pulled back into their place in line Shiya didn't even bother to look up. She just landed a sharp face-palm against her forehead and shook her head. Manley, meanwhile, looked to her for praise and treat, oblivious to ruckus he had caused. She shook her head and treated hin anyway. She couldn't but laugh at him. "You're something' else, pup."
